Do heat pumps make sense in Alberta?
Cold-climate air-source heat pumps are rated to operate down to about -30°C (NRCan). In very cold snaps, a backup such as an electric element or existing gas furnace may run. The federal rules (1 Nov 2026) say you don't need to remove your existing system, so keeping a gas furnace as backup is allowed. Natural gas homes qualify, but the government cautions that switching from gas may not lower your bills. See our gas guide.
Frequently asked questions
Do heat pumps work in Alberta winters?
NRCan says cold-climate air-source heat pumps can operate down to about -30°C, with supplemental heat sometimes needed below that. Many Alberta homes keep a gas furnace as backup.
What is Calgary's CEIP?
The Clean Energy Improvement Program offers financing repaid through property taxes. A third-party summary reports intake closed until winter 2026/27; check the City of Calgary.
