Is your heat pump on the eligible list? How AHRI numbers work
The rule
Your heat pump must be on the eligible product list, as identified by its AHRI number(s), and the make, model and AHRI number must appear on your receipt.
What an AHRI number is
Heat pumps are usually sold as a matched system: an outdoor unit plus an indoor unit (a wall head, air handler or furnace coil). The AHRI Directory certifies the performance of that exact combination and gives it a reference number. Change one component and the number can change.
How to check
- Ask for the AHRI reference number in your quote, along with brand and the outdoor, indoor and furnace or air handler model numbers.
- Open NRCan's National Heat Pump Rebate product list.
- Search the AHRI number.
- Check the brand and every model number match exactly.
- Save a screenshot with the date.
Watch out
- Not the same list as OHPA or Greener Homes. NRCan has separate lists for older programmes. Use the National Heat Pump Rebate one.
- Substitutions: if the installer swaps an indoor unit on install day, re-check.
- Lists change. NRCan says it makes no warranty about the data's accuracy. Its older lists were updated quarterly.
Status (1 Nov 2026): the NRCan page exists and is titled for the National Heat Pump Rebate. Its listings load dynamically, so we couldn't confirm how many models are on it yet.
Frequently asked questions
What is an AHRI number?
A reference number from the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) certification directory. It identifies a specific matched combination of outdoor and indoor equipment and its rated performance.
Where is the eligible product list?
NRCan's searchable product list has a page titled 'Heat Pump models eligible for the National Heat Pump Rebate program'. Search it by AHRI number, brand or model.
Why does the AHRI number matter?
The rules say your heat pump must be on the eligible product list as identified by its AHRI number(s), and the number must be on your receipt.
My system has two AHRI numbers. Is that OK?
The government refers to AHRI 'number(s)', so systems with more than one are anticipated. Put every number on the receipt.
